CHECK BACK LATER THIS EVENING FOR A REPORT ON THE SOUTH SQUAD.
Quarterbacks:
–University of Cincinnati Bearcats QB Tony Pike is doing all the little things right and working a lot better under center but still struggling throwing the ball down field with not a lot of spirals, zip, or touch.
—Central Michigan Chippewas QB Dan LeFevour continues to be the most impressive QB of the North squad. He has been showing the poise and accuracy he displayed during his college career but is showing doubters he can throw the ball with great timing but has continued to be inconsistent putting zip on his passes. LeFevour has really helped his draft stock thus far though.
–Oregon State QB Sean Canfield really struggled again and his lack of arm strength has been very apparent. He really has to drive the ball on throws to get anything on them but his accuracy has improved since yesterday. He was still not as comfortable in the pocket and threw some ducks in 11-on-11 drills. One scout said he may not get drafted until very late and would have to work in a West Coast offense.
Running Back:
–One player who has really helped himself thus far is Oregon Ducks RB LeGarrette Blount. Although Blount doesn’t have particularly quick feet, he has shown a good initial burst. He has shown a lot of toughness between the tackles, has been hard to bring down, and finishing runs.
–Wayne State Warriors RB RB Joique Bell showed some nice wiggle and moves on linebackers and showed an ability to take one to the house. Bell also is displaying good awareness running behind his blockers and falling forward in limited spaces.
–Virginia Cavailiers FB Rashawn Jackson having a very nice outing. Not only showing his blocking ability, but he’s a very good offensive threat.
Wide Receivers:
–University of Cincinnati Bearcats WR Mardy Gilyard continues to show that he is the best WR on the North Squad. He’s very smooth out of his breaks and although he had a drop or two, has shown great ability to catch the football compared to yesterday. He showed quick feet and positioning and showing tremendous moves after the catch.
Tight Ends:
–Wisconsin Badgers TE Garrett Graham showed a knack for getting open and consistently catching the football. Really looked unstoppable on bootlegs.
–Oregon Ducks TE Ed Dickson showed an ability to stretch the field and get down the seam.
Offensive Line
–Idaho Vandals OG Mike Iupati looks unbeatable at guard during one-on-one drills. Iupati but should remain inside because he was getting beaten badly at times when moved to LT, which may prevent him from being selected in the first 20 picks.
–Massachusetts Minutemen OT Vladimir Ducasse looks dominate on some run blocks but is getting beat horribly by speed rushers, most notably Michigan Wolverines DE/OLB Brandon Graham.
–Boston College Eagles C Matt Tennant has been doing a great job of sealing defenders in the trenches. Despite his lean frame, he uses his hands very well.
Defensive Line
–Purdue Boilermakers DT Mike Neal gets a good interior push with a bull rush and had a nice day.
–Michigan Wolverines DE/OLB Brandon Graham dominated yet again. He caused fits all day long for the top offensive linemen in Mobile. Graham is the most explosive defender on the field thus far. He has just about been unblockable with his wide array of pass rushing moves.
–Arkansas State Red Wolves DE Alex Carrington might have been the most pleasant surprise of the day. Carrington flashed a great burst off the snap and was drawing rave reviews all day.
Linebackers:
–The linebackers really had an impressive day overall as a group. Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has been all over the field since the first practice.
–Weatherspoon, and Washington Huskies LB Donald Butler have been very disrupted today, and instinctive blowing up screen plays. Both have been very smooth, low and explosive.
–Texas-Christian Horned Frogs LB Daryl Washington has also been a standout again with another strong effort.
–Utah Utes LB Koa Misi shined in one-on-one drills. He is playing with purpose and has been very aggressive. He’s been explosive and showed good push.
–On the downside, Nebraska Cornhuskers LB Phillip Dillard struggled a bit in pass coverage while trying to cover tight ends.
Defensive Backs:
–Boise State Broncos CB Kyle Wilson again quietly had a very nice day and is proving himself to be the top cover guy on the North Squad.
–Virgina Cavaliers CB Chris Cook stood out also today. He showed the best ball skills of the group today.
Special Teams:
–Michigan State Spartans K Brett Swenson showed a big leg during kick-offs yesterday, but did not capitalize on it as he struggled both accuracy and distance today.
—Michigan Wolverines P Zoltan Mesko was inconsistent today but still shouldn’t hurt his draft stock much in this weak punter class.
