Quarterbacks:
–University of Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow, like the other two QBs on the South roster, had a hard time driving the ball down field, especially over 20 yards. His accuracy was an issue early but improved throughout the day and some of his receivers dropped passes in 7-On-7 drills. Tebow did however flash his intelligence early helping others on the South squad with plays.
–University of Cincinnati Bearcats QB Tony Pike struggled a lot today. His arm was what many expected, average. He was bad on his timing most of the day but that is to be expected when throwing to new receivers in a new scheme on the first day. He really struggled with his touch downfield which was surprising considering his touch and accuracy is his strength. Pike really looked thin for his frame and many scouts believe this led to his injuries during his college career.
–Central Michigan Chippewas QB Dan LeFevour answered some questions about his ability to throw down the field. He was by far the best deep thrower on the North squad (may have had something to do with his weak armed competition) but still needs to show more zip on quick throws underneath and get the ball out quicker.
—West Virginia Mountaineers QB Jarrett Brown really was impressing with his physical tools with the strongest arm in on the south squad but even showed some good poise and presence in the pocket but struggled slightly with his mechanics and accuracy.
–Oregon State Beavers QB Sean Canfield’s lack of arm strength was very apparent today in practice. His accuracy was inconsistent throughout the day. He also fumbled two snaps in 11-on-11 drills, but not all was lost, he impressed some by showed more zip on the ball than many had anticipated.
Running Backs:
–Not a lot of big name running backs down in Mobile, especially considering the number of underclassmen on top of the RB board. Also, not a lot for a running back can do to standout during these type of practices but Oregon Ducks RB LeGarette Blount had a good day. He’s finishing all of his runs and really impressed a lot of people with his overall physique in weigh ins.
Wide Receivers:
–Missouri Tigers WR Danario Alexander looked physically impressive in weigh ins and on the field but really struggled today catching the football and running good routes.
–University of Cincinnati Bearcats WR Mardy Gilyard looked sharper than expected in his route running. Gilyard looked good catching the football to begin practice but began to really struggle hanging on to the football as the day went on.
–University Of Florida Gators WR Riley Cooper was very polished in all fazes of the game and stood out amongst the South receivers, especially his ability to get off the press. Definitely the most physical wide receiver of the group by far.
–Clemson Tigers WR Jacoby Ford did not look as crisp in his route running but recovered to have a great day catching everything after dropping his first pass thrown his way.
—Citadel Bulldogs WR Andre Roberts was a pleasant surprise today. He flashed a great burst coming off the L.O.S. and was getting good seperation most of the day.
—University Of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers WR Jeff Webb showed some ability to get behind the South defensive backs and get deep but struggled hanging on to the ball.
Offensive Line
–Southern California Trojans OL Jeff Byers was inconsistent today, really looked impressive at times and got washed in other spots.
–University of Massachusetts Minutemen OL Vladimir Ducasse played well in 11-on-11 drills. He did a nice job sealing defenders inside and worked a lot on his kick step. Definitely impressive physically and looked the part of a potential dominating right tackle. Struggled some with his feet against speed rushers though.
–Idaho Vandals OL Mike Iupati was a physical specimen and looked the part of a great guard and had great measurables. He struggled some with Penn State Nittany Lions DT Jared Odrick initially but had a good day.
Defensive Line:
–Texas Longhorns DL Lamarr Houston looked really exceptional today flashing a really aggressive burst and punch off the snap.
—Michigan Wolverines DE/OLB Brandon Graham showed great speed and a strong swim move working against Virginia Tech OT Ed Wang in one-on-one drills. It definitely helped make up for his disappointing measurables.
—Tennessee Volunteers NT Dan Williams, in the words of Mike Mayock (NFL Network Draft analyst) ate USC OL Jeff Byers’ lunch during one-on-one drills.
–Alabama Crimson Tide NT Terrance Cody was not as successful as Williams against Byers. Cody was easily tied up and seemed wore out after only a few snaps. Cody really did not look impressive physically showing up at an astounding 370 lbs and is beginning to look like the 2010 Senior Bowl version of the 2009 NFL Combine Andre Smith.
Defensive Backs:
–California Bears CB Syd’quan Thompson struggled catching the ball today. His lack of deep speed showed up but he flashed very quick feet and footwork.
–HUGE buzz surrounding Southern California Trojans S Taylor Mays since weigh ins. Absolutely a physical specimen who was “taylor” made for the prototypical safety. He used his hands and upper body very well during contact and was the most physical defensive back today (just ask Andre Roberts) and was definitely the best defensive back on the South squad.
–Oklahoma State Cowboys CB Perrish Cox was swarming around the ball all day long and even had, what would have been, a “pick six”.
–Boise State Broncos CB Kyle Wilson was definitely the star of the North defensive backs today, showing the ability to turn and run with even the fastest of wide receivers on the North for a tall corner.
Special Teams:
–Michigan State Spartans K Brett Swenson showed a good leg on kickoffs.
—Alabama Crimson Tide Kicker Leigh Tiffin lost his footing on one kick but was solid throughout.
—East Carolina Pirates P Matt Dodge showed he has a big enough leg for the next level but was inconsistent booting it today with too many low liners.
—University of Cincinnati Bearcats WR Mardy Gilyard and Clemson Tigers WR Jacoby Ford did a very good job of fielding punts but Maryland S Terrell Skinner struggled.
