Very unusual story in Miami, The Miami Herald had a very interesting article involving Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess.

Bess was on the phone in his car, conducting a live radio interview with the Jorge Sedana Show On 790 The Ticket, but stopped the session short after apparently witnessing an accident on his way to the Miami Dolphins’ training facility.

“I’m sorry, I have to call 911,” Bess said on the air. “Can I call you guys in like five minutes? I apologize. I’ll call you right back. I have to call 911 for this man. I’ll call you right back.”

Bess later explained that while he was on the road driving, he witnessed a truck in front of him swerving and then seen the vehicle flip over three times.

Bess stopped to make sure the driver was fine, and when he saw that others had come to the aid of the man, Davone got back into car and finished conducting his scheduled radio interview.

Hopefully now Brandon Marshall can see his teammate is a really good guy, just not nice enough to give up his #15 jersey for a new superstar taking his spot on the roster.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator Greg Olson said that third-year QB Josh Johnson is “entrenched” as the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind former first round pick and incumbent starter, Josh Freeman.

The Bucs’ other quarterbacks, Rudy Carpenter and undrafted rookie free agent Jevan Snead, never have taken a snap in the NFL even though they have some upside.

“A year ago, he was out of the mix,” Olson said of Johnson to Rick Stroud (St. Petersburg Times). “We had Luke (McCown) and Byron (Leftwich) in here and we had just drafted Josh Freeman. So Josh Johnson was getting very few if any reps.

The nice thing is we’re still in the process of developing Josh Freeman, but Josh (Johnson) has entrenched himself as that No. 2 guy right now, so he’s getting the majority of the other reps.”

“I’m a different quarterback because of that experience,” Bucs QB Johnson said. “I have those games I can look back on and understand exactly what happens out there. It’s totally different now because I’m the one getting the reps.”

Johnson barely completed half of his passes (50.9%) last season for 685 yards. He also threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns.

Johnson is a former 5th round selection with a ton of upside with tremendous physical tools but is still very raw, as is the case with starter Josh Freeman and rookie Jevan Snead.

With not a lot of experience on the roster, and a ton of youth at the WR position with, second round pick, rookie Arrelious Benn and second year receiver Sammie Stroughter, there could be a lot of problems in the Bucs passing game.

Adam Schefter (ESPN) is reporting the Baltimore Ravens are closing in on signing former Cincinnati Bengals free agent K Shayne Graham to a one-year deal, according to league sources.

Graham is the the 5th most accurate kicker in NFL history and the first Bengals place kicker to make a Pro Bowl. The Bengals did not attempt to resign their most prolific kicker in franchise history following his one year franchise tag contract.

Graham struggled throughout the 2009 season, but some of the issues can be put on horrible long snapping play that was a thorn in the side of the Bengals the entire season.

The final straw that sealed the fate for Graham as a Bengal was his play in the Bengals Wild Card home playoff loss to the New York Jets. Shayne missed two field goals, including a 28-yard attempt that would have cut the score to 24-17 late in the fourth quarter.

Miami Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown has yet to sign his $3.97 million tender because he’s pushing for a multiyear deal with the team. The team has not yet put an offer on the table to ensure Ronnie a long term deal in Miami, reports Omar Kelly (South Florida Sun-Sentinel).

Although Brown admits he isn’t thrilled about the prospect of playing on a one-year tender deal, he isn’t going to let it get in the way of playing the sport he loves.

“I can’t worry about it too much. I can’t sign myself,” Brown said. “If I start to worry about it, is it going to change it? If I start to talk about it, is it going to change it? Is (my contract situation) going to become a positive or a negative?”

Brown has been someone who has been tied to a ton of trade rumors throughout his career with the Dolphins and always seemed to have a lack of commitment from the organization during his stay. I expect Ronnie’s tenure with the franchise to be possibly over following this upcoming season.

RB Larry Johnson was one of the Redskins first acquisitions under the new regime in Washington, headed by Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan.

Johnson said his transition thus far with his new team has been just fine, according to Mark Viera (The Washington Post).

Johnson said he’s comfortable with the number of carries he has received thus far in minicamps and during Organized Team Activities this offseason.

He also feels comfortable in the team’s zone-blocking scheme, even though the system.

“I think it’s definitely still downhill, because we’re not actually running sideways,” Johnson said. “We’re waiting for one or two cuts and we’re in there. People know I’m going to run downhill. As long as we stretch, stretch, stretch, and then bring it downhill, there’s going to be holes on the backside.”

Johnson definitely seems like a good fit for the one cut, run down hill type scheme, but the backfield does seem a bit crowded in D.C. It is definitely a position to keep an eye on, especially in training camp.

Looks as if the Baltimore Ravens are staying pat and not giving in when it comes to shopping young offensive tackle Jared Gaither.

John Clayton (ESPN) is reporting that the asking price for Gaither remains at least a second round selection or higher.

The Ravens remain in the driver seat here however, with the strong demand for offensive tackles around the league and the emergence of last year’s first round pick, Michael Oher.

Oher is slotted in to take Gaither’s spot at left tackle and the Ravens plan to move Gaither to the right tackle spot if he remains on the roster.

Gaither is still a young lineman with a good amount of untapped potential still remaining. If I am a team such as the Buffalo Bills, who are in dire need of an offensive tackle, I am picking up the phone and sending the draft selection over for him yesterday.

Miami Dolphins NT Jason Ferguson vows he will be 100 percent by the start of the Miami Dolphins training camp later this summer, according to Brian Biggane (The Palm Beach Post).

“By training camp, I want to be out there with my guys, and giving them what they can expect when November comes,” Ferguson said.

The 36 year old defensive lineman will sit out the first eight games of the 2010 season while serving a suspension for using an illegal substance though.

The Dolphins will miss his presence in the middle. Although the Dolphins brass have been raving about veteran DE Randy Starks move to nose tackle, the team is still pretty thin at the position.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Dolphins show a bunch of different looks this upcoming season with the uncertainty of the nose tackle position in their base 3-4 defense and a strong unit of young defensive lineman the likes of Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling, and first round draft pick, rookie Jared Odrick.

Cincinnati Bengals DE Antwan Odom was on his way to having a very nice season with the playoff bound Bengals until Odom suffered one of the worst injuries possible for an athlete.

Odom ruptured his Achilles’ tendon and was forced out for the rest of the season.

Jason La Canfora (NFL Network) is reporting that Odom has returned to the practice field and plans to make a full recovery for the upcoming season.

After receiving a huge contract from the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent following a strong 2007 campaign with the Tennessee Titans, he had a very disappointing first year wearing the orange and black.

After battling through nagging injuries, his first season in the “jungle”, Odom had a very successful second season before his serious injury, recording five sacks in one game against the Green Bay Packers.

The Bengals struggled rushing the passer with just their front four the rest of the season, and they hope Antwan returns to his old form from a year ago before his injury, this upcoming season.

Westbrook is expected to pick between the Denver Broncos, St. Louis Rams or Washington Redskins.

The Washington Redskins definitely present the best opportunity to win now, with Westbrook on the downside of his career. It also doesn’t hurt that his former teammate in Philadelphia, QB Donovan McNabb, is now playing in D.C.

Although new Head Coach Mike Shanahan is a master of the running game and likes to use a ton of different backs, it seems a bit crowded in the Redskins backfield. Washington signed free agent RBs Larry Johnson and Willie Parker to go with incumbent starter Clinton Portis, whom Shanahan is familiar with from his time with the Denver Broncos.

With his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, he would be a nice fit in the Denver Broncos’ offensive scheme. But remember, Josh McDaniels used a first round selection on RB Knowshon Moreno in last year’s draft, whom they have high hopes for.

Although St. Louis is by far and away the worst team of the list, and quite possibly the worst in the NFL, it presents Westbrook the best opportunity for playing time. St. Louis is desperate for a compliment to All-Pro Steven Jackson and even his health has been an issue throughout his career, so it would definitely give Westbrook his best chance of a lot of playing time.

When it is all said and done, I think he winds up in Washington however, and someone will be out there way out I would assume.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Carnell “Cadillac” Williams has been one of the NFL’s sad stories throughout his short career.

The Auburn Tigers product was a breakout performer as a rookie for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, desperate for a spark in their running game.

Williams was selected number five overall of the 2005 NFL Draft, the third running back off the board in the top five, after teammate Auburn teammate, RB Ronnie Brown, went number two overall to the Miami Dolphins and a pick behind Texas RB, Cedric Benson who was selected number four overall by the Chicago Bears.

Since entering the league, Cadillac hasn’t had a lot of mileage on his tires however. Although he was the 2005 Rookie Of The Year, he suffered through some nicks and injuries along the way.

2006 was also a struggle for Williams as well, with problems to his offensive line and dealing with a nagging injury throughout the season. His 2007 was also miserable, after suffering a patellar tendon tear in a divisional matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Destined to play in the 2008 season, Williams struggled to regain his health until midseason, only to have his season ended again during a December match up against the Oakland Raiders. He had torn the patellar tendon in his other, left knee.

Many had doubts, including myself, whether Williams would ever play another down in the NFL following his second patellar tendon tear in both knees in consecutive seasons.

Cadillac was out to prove the critics wrong, and had a nice 2009 season, rushing for 823 yards in 2009. He was a strong contender for the AP Comeback Player of the Year but was defeated by another strong performance from New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, who also was following up a devastating knee injury from the previous season.

Now, in an interview with USA Today’s Skip Wood, Carnell said he is finally back to 100 percent. Williams that his 2009 campaign “was just a start.”

Williams added, “I’m finally back to 100% and all that. And, you know, this is my first offseason in two years where I haven’t had to rehab just to get myself back on the field. I know I can show a lot more than what I already have. Straight up, I mean, I just feel my best years are ahead.”

I am definitely rooting for him to succeed. This is one of many players, I will most surely have on my radar this upcoming season.
